Frequently Asked MRI Questions
Q: What is an MRI?
A: MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a safe way to take detailed pictures of the brain and body using magnets and radio waves. It does not use X-rays or radiation.
Q: Will the MRI hurt?
A: No, an MRI is painless. You won’t feel the magnet working. The machine makes loud knocking sounds, but we provide earplugs or headphones to make you comfortable.
Q: How long does it take?
A: This depends on the study, but it usually ranges from 1-2 hours. You’ll be asked to lie still so we can get clear pictures.
Q: Is it safe?
A: Yes. MRI has been used in research and medicine for decades. There are no known harmful side effects. However, because the MRI uses a strong magnet, people with certain metal implants (like pacemakers or cochlear implants) may not be able to participate.
Q: What if I’m nervous or claustrophobic?
A: Many people feel a little nervous at first. You can talk to the MRI technologist at any time, and we’ll make sure you’re as comfortable as possible. For children, we often use practice sessions (“mock scans”) to help them get used to the scanner.
Q: Can parents stay with their child during the MRI?
A: Yes, in most cases a parent or caregiver can be in the room during the scan (as long as they don’t have metal implants). We’ll provide a safe chair and hearing protection.
Q: What should I wear?
A: Comfortable clothing without metal (no zippers, snaps, or sequins). We may also provide a gown if needed.
